Insurance

It is illegal to drive a car which you are not insured to drive. There are lots of different insurance policies out there - you could use comparison website to find the best price, but check the excess for drivers under 21 usually the excess for under 21 year olds is around 200 more than someone over 21 driving on the same policy. If you do have a minor accident, it might be worth looking into how much damage is going to cost sometimes its cheaper to pay for the damage yourself rather than paying your excess, and retain your no-claims bonus if you have one. Remember third party insurance might be cheaper, but if you do have an accident, your own car isnt covered. You may also find it cheaper if your parents have a multi car insurance policy.

Road Tax

You need to pay road tax every 6 or 12 months. The amount you pay varies according to the emissions classification of your car. When the disk is close to running out, the DVLA should send a letter to the address the car is registered at, to remind you to go and get a new one. You need to fill out a V10 form at the post office, and provide your vehicle registration document, a valid certificate of insurance and a current MOT certificate. You can now also do it online - at the vehicle license website.

You need to get an MOT after your car is 3 years old or more, and it needs to be renewed every year at a cost of approximately 50.35 each time. Shop around now to find the best price. MOTs are a legal requirement that ensure all vehicles on the road are safe and road worthy. Driving without one could get you a fine, or even a ban from driving.
