The first thing you should do when you breakdown or have an accident is to stop as soon as it is safe and stay calm. It is illegal not to stop after an accident. Turn your cars engine off and turn your hazard lights on to warn other drivers and cyclists. If there are others involved, do try to help but always put your own safety first. Do not take risks. If anyone has been injured, or if the accident is blocking the road - call the police (and an ambulance if it is needed) as soon as possible.
You will then need to take the details from everyone else involved AND any witnesses (drivers name, name of the vehicle owner, address, contact numbers, insurer and insurance number, witnesses name and contact details).

Try to avoid saying sorry or accepting blame for the accident until you know exactly what happened. Dont be intimidated by older or more experienced drivers. If someone leaves the scene of an accident without giving their details, try to jot down their number plate and call the police immediately.
If you crash into something on or near the road you should still stop and leave your details. If you crash into a parked car, for example, you should you leave your details on the windscreen so that the owner can contact you when they return to their vehicle.
Contact your insurance as soon as possible after an accident. Even if you dont plan on making a claim, make sure you let them know youve had an accident or it may invalidate your policy. The insurance company will then handle getting your car fixed if you are making a claim, or otherwise call your breakdown company if you need recovery. Unfortunately, its then time to tell your parents. Believe it or not, they may be cross, but they’ll be more pleased that youre ok.
