As you progress through the Academy, you will gain both driving and personal skills designed to make you an accomplished safe driver - from Silver Level ‘beginners’ to Black Level ‘advanced drivers’. When you reach Purple Level, you are ready to take the driving test.
Each level reflects higher skills and opens new possibilities and options. Once a level is completed additional cars and track areas can be tried (as available).
Silver Level Driver
Your first driving experience - An introduction to basic car control skills, observation and theory with use of the accelerator, footbrake, handbrake and steering.
Red Level Driver
You can demonstrate reliable basic skills for starting and stopping smoothly, steering and manoeuvring, reversing in a straight line.
You understand the principles for preparing to drive safely. You know why seat and seatbelt adjustment are important in an accident.
Orange Level Driver
You have mastered basic car control skills and use indicators and mirrors effectively.
You never forget your vehicle check because you understand how it affects safety.
You execute most basic skills like parking and emergency stops reliably.
Yellow Level Driver
You have mastered skills for reversing around a corner, turning in the road and can use the clutch and change gear correctly. Hill starts are no problem.
You understand the personal factors that affect safety, like fatigue, alcohol and medication.
You demonstrate a knowledge of basic road signs and traffic rules for crossings.
Green Level Driver
You understand the basic physics of vehicle control and have been given an introduction to the principles of efficient driving.
Youve gained an understanding of the rules of the road and traffic.
You have a thorough understanding of the special risk factors for young drivers (peer pressure, showingoff, etc.).
Cyan Level Driver
You know the rules of the road and understand the principles of safe driving including the main causes of accidents.
You can evaluate your own skills insightfully and are able to assess the influencing factors that increase risks.
Youve been introduced to the problems of handling a car on slippery surfaces and understand the latest safety technologies.
Blue Level Driver
You can apply all of the skills that youve learned up to Cyan Level effectively on the road.
You are getting used to reacting to the unexpected behaviour of other road users.
You know how to identify and anticipate potential hazards.
Purple Level Driver
You are skilled on all road types that are permitted for the provisional licence, including A-roads and dual carriageways.
You can drive confidently in all conditions, showing excellent observation skills and anticipation of hazards.
You are cooperative in your interaction with others.
You are aware of the personal, physical and emotional factors that influence driving. You have effective strategies for controlling passengers and for self-control.
Black Level Driver
You have now been driving for at least three months since passing your test and have completed Pass-Plus 3 and a Refresher Session.
You have a mature and intelligent approach, demonstrating excellent driving skills and attitude.
