Getting in some practice

At the Academy, we strongly recommend that you get extra practice between your sessions with your coach. The best way to do this is by getting out on the road with a parent, guardian or a trusted family friend. We encourage you to do this as often as you can persuade someone to accompany you! Dont forget, that to get the best out of these practice sessions and avoid unnecessary conflict, you and your brave volunteer could do the Parent Partner Package before you get out there together.

  • They have held a full EC/EAA car licence for 3 years or more
  • Are over 21 years old

Unless they happen to be a driving instructor, theyre not allowed to charge you.

The car needs to be taxed, insured for both you and the person accompanying you. It needs to be fitted with L-Plates (or D-Plates in Wales), in a roadworthy condition and have a valid MOT certificate (if it is older than 3 years old).

Its also important to remember that, just like its illegal for you to use the phone when driving, its illegal for anyone who is supervising you to use the phone too. So if either of you do need to send a text or make a call, make sure that you pull over when its safe and legal, and turn the engine of the car off before either of you make the call. Using a hands-free kit is an option, but this can be distracting for new drivers, so its safer to pull over.
