RoadSense : A Real Change in Perspective

The A Class Driving Academy cars

By 2020 the Department of Transport aim to reduce the total number of road deaths and injuries amongst children and young people by at least 50%. RoadSense by Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy is an engaging and proactive awareness programme encompassing many aspects of road safety that aims to contribute to this initiative.

RoadSense complements existing campaigns such as Drive SMART, Theatre in Education and Safe Drive Stay Alive. Designed for year 10 students, it uses practical and emotional scenarios to promote active thinking and discussion about road safety issues that affect our young people.

RoadSense courses are available during term time only and are held at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge, Surrey. Mercedes-Benz World is a unique visitor attraction built on the historic site of the original Brooklands race track. All tuition takes place in a safe, quiet environment, away from public roads, traffic and under the careful supervision of highly qualified driving coaches with considerable experience in coaching young people.

The RoadSense program consists of:

1. Introduction to RoadSense 30 minutes

The students are briefed on the RoadSense agenda and introduced to the learning concept of considering road safety from the driver, passenger, cyclist and pedestrian point of view.

2. Practical session behind the wheel 90 minutes

Students are put in groups of three and allocated 30 minutes driving time each, using the handling facilities at Mercedes-Benz World. The session will be conducted under the careful guidance of a qualified Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy coach with the aim demonstrating the implications of distractions and speed on safety out on the road.

The session will involve real life situations including passenger and music distractions. The goal is not to teach kids to drive but to make them to understand traffic from various perspectives. Our aim is to provoke discussion about the complexities of traffic situations and introduce the topic of the social and emotional difficulties that they will also face out on the road.

3. Group Discussion 60 minutes

Students are divided into groups of 10. Self assessment and reflection skills are developed through group discussions covering a broad range of subjects including passenger and peer pressure, speed, sensation seeking and in-car distractions, such as mobile phones and music. Students will reflect on real life experiences, including those from the track session and discuss how they might prepare themselves for the possible scenarios that they may encounter.
